Product Description This Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is an exciting new rescue device just made available to the public, July 1, 2003. It's technology has actually been used for years by the Marines, but has only recently been approved for land use by backpackers, campers and anyone venturing into the backcountry. PLB's are emergency life saving devices to be used in life threatening situations only and when all else fails. Simply flip the antenna up, turn the switch to transmit, and Search and Rescue will be notified with satellite speed and precision. Transmission, location and rescue have never been faster. ***HOW IT WORKS: PLB's transmit signals on internationally recognized distress frequencies. Once a signal is received, a conglomerate of international satellites can "fix" on the signal using a Doppler Shift location method, ultimately bringing rescuers within a .75 mile radius of the victim at which point rescuers will hone in on the frequency. Each PLB is equipped with a UIN (Unique Identifying Number), a 15-digit alphanumeric code transmitted in the electronic burst to the satellites. The electronic burst notifies Search and Rescue of your location, while your UIN accesses a database to provide rescuers with your name, address, phone number, medical history and any relevant rescue info. AFRCC (Air Force Rescue Coordination Center) and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) monitor the 406MHz signals. The PLB 406 has an 11 year lithium battery that transmits for a minimum of 24 hours at -40°F (-40ºC). In warmer temperatures the battery will transmit for several days. And because the PLB employs satellite transmission, its usability knows no borders. For a PLB with GPS unit plug-in capability, see the GyPSI [ARC0002]. ***FEATURE DETAILS: Small, lightweight unit is easily carried in pack or pocket; simple 3-position switch with color coded LED; battery power test switch; flat, staineless steel antenna wraps compactly around bottom case for easy stowage; unit floats if dropped in water, waterproof to 1 meter (3.3 feet). REQUIRES REGISTRATION WITH THE NOAA; INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED.
Bottom Line: Adventures in remote areas come with a risk. Prepare for an emergency with a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).
