Product Description This Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) has been sold and used for years around the world, and has just been made available to the U.S. market as of July 1, 2003. It's technology has also been used extensively by the Marines, but has only recently been approved for land use by backpackers, campers and anyone venturing into the backcountry. PLB's are emergency life saving devices to be used in life threatening situations only and when all else fails. Simply flip the antenna up, turn the switch to transmit, and Search and Rescue will be notified with satellite speed and precision. Transmission, location and rescue have never been faster. ***HOW THE GyPSI WORKS: This PLB transmits a signal on internationally recognized distress frequencies. It includes a small optical cable to allow you to plug your GPS unit into it PLB (for non-GPS compatible unit, see standard model [ACR0001]). During transmission, the satellite will acquire both DOPPLER SHIFT latitude and longitude coordinates as well as GPS latitude and longitude coordinates to pinpoint your location, so long as your GPS is properly functioning and acquiring satellites. This model will alert Search And Rescue (SAR) to your precise latitude and longitude coordinates within about 5-15 minutes as well as utilize the DOPPLER SHIFT technology to pinpoint latitude and longitude coordinates for SAR which can take about 1 hour (depending on your location on the Earth). The PLB has an 11 year lithium battery that is required to transmit for a minimum of 24 hours at -40°F (-40°C). In warmer temperatures the battery will transmit for several days. And because the PLB employs satellite transmission, its usability knows no borders. ***FEATURE DETAILS: Small, lightweight unit is easily carried in pack or pocket; recessed, waterproof GPS/programming interface; simple 3-position switch with color coded LED; battery power test switch; flat, stainless steel antenna wraps compactly around bottom case for easy stowage; unit floats if dropped in water, waterproof to 1 meter (3.3 feet). REQUIRES REGISTRATION WITH THE NOAA; INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED.
Bottom Line: With an integrated GPS unit, the GyPSI takes the "search" out of Search and Rescue.
